Why become an Official?

  • It’s easy to get involved
  • No Previous Experience Needed
  • Flexible Scheduling

If you have any questions about becoming an Intramural Official, see the directions below. If you have additional questions about the position, please email Intramural Sports Coordinator Mike Valentine. If you have questions about completing your employment paperwork, please contact Amanda Fiala.

How to become an Official?

  1. Fill out an application.
  2. Attend a New Official's Information Meeting, Followed by a Sport Training – New Official's Information Meetings for students interested in officiating typically happen at the start of each semester. If there is one offered, attend that meeting and then attend the specific training meeting for the sport you would like to officiate (Basketball is the only sport for which we hire scorekeepers). If there is not a New Official's Information Meeting offered, or if the New Official's Information Meeting has already taken place, contact Mike Valentine (click on his name to email). A list of the meetings, including dates, times and locations, can be found below. If you miss a meeting, please contact Mike Valentine for information on how to proceed.
  3. Get Hired! - Following training for each sport, the Intramural Sports Administrative Staff will determine who will get hired as officials and/or scorekeepers for that sport. If you are hired, you will be placed on the schedule and must complete Step 4.
  4. Complete Employment Paperwork* – If you are hired as an Intramural Official or Scorekeeper, you must schedule a meeting with Recreational Services Human Resources; Amanda Fiala at amanda-fiala@uiowa.edu or (319) 384-1166. Employment paperwork must be complete prior to, OR within 3 days, of your first scheduled shift. Important original documents to bring to your appointment can be found here PDF iconList_of_Acceptable_I9_Documents.pdf. If you don’t have the needed documents, call Amanda to discuss options.

*Some students would like to provide their social security card as one of the forms of identification. If you have an existing card but not with you on campus, you can file for a replacement card. It is easy to do. You can do so by going to their office in Coralville with a form of identification. There is no cost and they will provide you with a receipt that you can bring to your appointment with HR. We can use this receipt in lieu of the document until your card comes in the mail.
