How to Become an Official

  1. Fill out an application.
  2. Attend a New Official's Information Meeting, Followed by a Sport Training – New Official's Information Meetings for students interested in officiating typically happen at the start of each semester. If there is one offered, attend that meeting and then attend the specific training meetings for the sports you would like to officiate. If there is not a New Official's Information Meeting offered, or if the New Official's Information Meeting has already taken place, contact Mike Valentine (click on his name to email). A list of the training meetings, including dates, times and locations, can be found below. If you miss a meeting, please contact Mike Valentine for information on how to proceed.
  3. Get Hired! - Following training for each sport, the Intramural Sports Administrative Staff will determine who will get hired as officials and/or scorekeepers for that sport. If you are hired, you will be placed on the schedule and must complete Step 4.
  4. Complete Employment Paperwork* – If you are hired as an Intramural Official or Scorekeeper, you must schedule a meeting with Recreational Services Human Resources; at rec-hr@uiowa.edu or (319) 384-1166. Employment paperwork must be complete prior to, OR within 3 days, of your first scheduled shift. Important original documents to bring to your appointment can be found here PDF iconList_of_Acceptable_I9_Documents.pdf. Those who would like to provide their social security card as one of the forms of identification but do not have it  with them my file for a replacement card at the Social Security Card Administration Office in Coralville.
