How to Become an Official

  1. Fill out an application.
  2. Attend a New Official's Information Meeting, Followed by a Sport Training – New Official's Information Meetings for students interested in officiating typically happen at the start of each semester. If there is one offered, attend that meeting and then attend the specific training meetings for the sports you would like to officiate. If there is not a New Official's Information Meeting offered, or if the New Official's Information Meeting has already taken place, contact Matt Schaefer (click on his name to email). A list of the training meetings, including dates, times and locations, can be found below. If you miss a meeting, please contact Matt Schaefer for information on how to proceed.
  3. Get Hired! - Following training for each sport, the Intramural Sports Administrative Staff will determine who will get hired as officials for that sport. If you are hired, you will be placed on the schedule and must complete Step 4.
  4. Complete Employment Paperwork* – If you are hired as an Intramural Official, you must schedule a meeting with Division of Student Life Human Resources; at HR-StudentLife@uiowa.edu or (319) 335-0121. Employment paperwork must be complete prior to, OR within 3 days, of your first scheduled shift. Important original documents to bring to your appointment can be found here PDF iconList_of_Acceptable_I9_Documents.pdf. If you don’t have the needed documents, call Human Resources to discuss options. Those who would like to provide their social security card as one of the forms of identification but do not have it with them may file for a replacement card at the Social Security Card Administration Office in Coralville.
