How to Become an Official

  1. Fill out an application.
  2. Attend a New Official's Information Meeting, Followed by a Sport Training – New Official's Information Meetings for students interested in officiating typically happen at the start of each semester. If there is one offered, attend that meeting and then attend the specific training meetings for the sports you would like to officiate. If there is not a New Official's Information Meeting offered, or if the New Official's Information Meeting has already taken place, contact Chris Spencer (click on his name to email). A list of the training meetings, including dates, times and locations, can be found below. If you miss a meeting, please contact Chris Spencer for information on how to proceed.
  3. Get Hired! - Following training for each sport, the Intramural Sports Administrative Staff will determine who will get hired as officials for that sport. If you are hired, you will be placed on the schedule and must complete Step 4.
  4. Complete Employment Paperwork* – If you are hired as an Intramural Official, you must schedule a meeting with Division of Student Life Human Resources; at HR-StudentLife@uiowa.edu or (319) 335-0121. Employment paperwork must be complete prior to, OR within 3 days, of your first scheduled shift. If you don’t have the needed documents, call Human Resources to discuss options. Those who would like to provide their social security card as one of the forms of identification but do not have it with them may file for a replacement card at the Social Security Card Administration Office in Coralville. 

New Official's Information Meetings

Anyone interested in becoming an Intramural Sports Official, that has not worked for Intramural Sports, must attend one New Officials Information Meeting. We will go over job requirements, expectations, and what the next steps are to becoming an Intramural Sports Official! If you cannot make a New Official's Information Meeting, but still wish to officiate Intramural Sports, contact Chris Spencer to set-up alternate arrangements. New Officials Information Meeting dates and times for the Fall 2021 semester are:

Slow-Pitch Softball

  • Classroom/Field Clinic: Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex (HTRC) Iowa Turf Classroom and Iowa Turf area. This is the first of two mandatory training sessions for Slow-Pitch Softball umpiress.
  • Scrimmage Games: Wednesday, September 1, 2021 from approximately 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Softball Complex (HSC). Umpires will get a chance to put their skills to practice during live scrimmages with real teams. This is the second of two mandatory training sessions for Slow-Pitch Softball umpires.

Flag Football

If you cannot make one of the trainings, or have missed one of the trainings already, but are still interested in officiating Flag Football, please email christopher-spencer@uiowa.edu.

  • Classroom/"Field" Clinic 1: Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 7:00-9:00 PM in Room E220 of the Field House, followed by on-"field" instruction in the Field House South Gym. This is the first of three mandatory training sessions for Flag Football officials.
  • Classroom/"Field" Clinic 2: Wednesday, September 8, 2021 from 7:00-9:00 PM in Room E220 of the Field House, followed by on-"field" instruction in the Field House South Gym. This is the second of three mandatory training sessions for Flag Football officials.
  • Scrimmage Games: Thursday, September 9, 2021 from approximately 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Recreation Fields (HRF). All officials will get a chance to put their skills to practice during live scrimmages with real teams. This is the third of three mandatory training sessions for Flag Football officials.

Indoor Soccer

  • Classroom/Field Clinic 1: Monday, September 20, 2021 from 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex (HTRC) Iowa Turf conference room, followed by on-field instruction on the Iowa Turf. This is the first of three mandatory training sessions for Indoor Soccer officials.
  • Classroom/Field Clinic 2: Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex (HTRC) Iowa Turf conference room, followed by on-field instruction on the Iowa Turf. This is the second of three mandatory training sessions for Indoor Soccer officials.
  • Scrimmage Games: Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 7:00-10:00 PM at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex (HTRC) Iowa Turf. All officials will get a chance to put their skills to practice during live scrimmages with real teams. This is the third of three mandatory training sessions for Indoor Soccer officials.

Volleyball

  • Classroom/Court Clinic: Monday, October 25, 2021 from 7:00-10:00 PM in Room 201 of the Field House, followed by on-court instruction in the Field House South Gym. This meeting will provide classroom instruction followed by on-court instruction. This is the first of two mandatory training sessions for Volleyball officials.
  • Scrimmage Games: Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from approximately 7:00-10:00 PM (location TBD). All officials will get a chance to put their skills to practice during live scrimmages with real teams. This is the second of two mandatory training sessions for Volleyball officials.
