The Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex (HTRC) houses eight indoor and 12 outdoor tennis courts, 6,000 square feet of fitness space (including cardio and strength equipment), two indoor turf fields, locker rooms and the Outdoor Rental Center. The outdoor courts are named the Klotz Tennis courts, named after former Men’s Tennis Coach, Don Klotz. The HTRC is also the home of the University of Iowa Women's Tennis, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Field Hockey, Softball, and Hawkeye Marching Band.

The facility is located at 2820 Prairie Meadow Dr. in Iowa City, just west of the Athletics Hall of Fame

Fitness Equipment

Recreational Services members have access to use the fitness equipment in the HTRC. 

Cardiovascular equipment:

Precor Treadmills, Magnum Upright Bicycles, Magnum Recumbent Bicycles, Precor EFX Elliptical, Crosstrainer, Stairmaster, Stairclimbers

Weight equipment:

Cable Cross Over, Weight Assisted Chin/Dip Machine, 2 Elite Power Rack, Magnum,Leg Press

Free weights:

3 lbs – 110 lbs.  

Miscellaneous:

Stretching Area with Resist-a-balls and mats, Storage cubbies, Pull up bands, Weighted Medicine Balls, BOSU Stability Trainer, Foam Roller

Directions

  • From I-80: Follow I-80 to Exit 242 (First Avenue): Turn onto First Avenue (right from east bound, left from west bound). Follow First Avenue, going south, to the Highway 6/Second Street intersection. Continue straight through the Highway 6/Second Street intersection. First Avenue will turn into Mormon Trek Boulevard. Turn right onto Prairie Meadow Drive. The HTRC will be on your right.
  • From US-218: Follow US 218 to Exit 93 (Melrose Avenue): Turn onto Melrose Avenue (right from north bound, left from south bound). Continue on Melrose Avenue, going east, for about one (1) mile. At the Melrose Avenue and Hawkeye Park Road intersection, turn left. Follow Hawkeye Park Road to Prairie Meadow Drive, then turn right. The HTRC will be on your left.
  • From downtown Iowa City/UI campus: Follow Burlington Street west across the river (it turns into Grand Ave after the bridge). Go to the top of Grand Avenue and veer left (south) at the roundabout. Go 1 block to Melrose. Turn right on Melrose. Take Melrose past Kinnick  Stadium and past Finkbine Golf Course to Morman Trek. Turn right on Morman Trek. Go for 1 block and turn left on Prairie Meadow Drive. Go for about 200 yards and the HTRC will be on your right.

Bus Routes:

  • From the East side residence halls: 
    • Before 9:00 PM on weekdays:
      1. 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest
        • Catch the 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest and take to the HTRC. The bus will stop at the “HTRC North” stop near the front entrance of the facility.
          • The 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest bus will pick up from outside Macbride Hall at :06, :26, and :46 after the hour, or outside Schaeffer Hall at :10, :30, or :50 after the hour.
          • The 42-Pentacrest bus drops off at the HTRC North stop approximately :04, :24, and :44 after the hour.
      2. On-Demand Shuttle
        • Call the Cambus On-Demand shuttle to schedule a ride. You can schedule by calling 319-335-8633 and may schedule rides up to 1-hour in advance. The On-Demand Shuttle can generally pick-up within 15 minutes.
    • After 9:00 PM on weekdays:
      1. On Demand Shuttle
        • To get to or from the Hawkeye Campus after 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, you must call the Cambus On-Demand shuttle to schedule a ride. You can schedule by calling 319-335-8633 and may schedule rides up to 1-hour in advance. The On-Demand Shuttle can generally pick-up within 15 minutes.
    • Weekends:
      1. Hawkeye Interdorm
        •  
          • Catch the Hawkeye Interdorm bus to take to the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The bus will stop at the “HTRC North” stop near the front entrance of the facility.
            • The Hawkeye Interdorm bus will pick up from outside Currier at :04 after the hour.
          • The Hawkeye Interdorm bus drops off at the HTRC approximately :25 past the hour.
      2. On-Demand Shuttle
        • Call the Cambus On-Demand shuttle to schedule a ride. You can schedule by calling 319-335-8633 and may schedule rides up to 1-hour in advance. The On-Demand Shuttle can generally pick-up within 15 minutes.
  • From the West side residence halls:
    • Before 9:00 PM on weekdays:
      1. Red Route or Blue Route AND Pentacrest route.
        • Catch the 31 Red Route or 32 Blue Route outside Rienow and take to the Pentacrest. See the links for Red Route and Blue Route timing and information.
        • Get off at the Pentacrest and catch the 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest and take to the HTRC. The bus will stop at the “HTRC North” stop near the front entrance of the facility.
          • The 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest bus will pick up from outside Macbride Hall at :06, :26, and :46 after the hour, or outside Schaeffer Hall at :10, :30, or :50 after the hour.
          • The 42-Pentacrest bus drops off at the HTRC North stop approximately :04, :24, and :44 after the hour.

      • Interdorm AND 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest
        • Catch the Interdorm route to the Pentacrest. Get off at Macbride Hall.
          • The Interdorm bus picks up at Mayflower at approximately :15 and :45 after the hour.
          • The Interdorm bus drops off at Macbride Hall at approximately :05 and :35 after the hour.
        • Catch the 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest and take to the HTRC. The bus will stop at the “HTRC North” stop near the front entrance of the facility.
          • The 42 Hawkeye-Pentacrest bus will pick up from outside Macbride Hall at :06, :26, and :46 after the hour, or outside Schaeffer Hall at :10, :30, or :50 after the hour.
          • The 42-Pentacrest bus drops off at the HTRC North stop approximately :04, :24, and :44 after the hour.

Parking

Metered parking is available directly in front of the HTRC main entrance.  

Tennis and Pickleball Court Reservations

Rates shown are per person per ½ hour.  Reservations are made in ½ hour increments up to a max of 2 hours.  All players must pay their court fees before entering the courts.

Court Reservation Polices 

  • Current University of Iowa students and Recreational Services members may make a reservation up to SEVEN days in advance of the current date.  For example, an individual booking a reservation on a Monday could reserve courts Monday – Monday.  

  • Non-members may make a reservation THREE days in advance of the current date. For example, an individual booking a reservation on Sunday could reserve courts Sunday – Wednesday.  

  • A court reservation may be made for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes per day on one court.   Only two non-consecutive reservations can be made by an individual each day.  

  • Play begins on the hour or ½ hour. Play starts at 5:30am Monday through Friday and 8am on Saturday and Sunday. 


Court Cancellation and No-Show Polices 

  • Court cancellation fees are the responsibility of the person who booked the court reservation. 

  • Court reservations must be canceled 4 hours prior to the court reservation to avoid court fees.  

  • If participants do not cancel or attend their court reservation, the reservation creator will be charged $10 per half hour for the entire length of the reservation. Recreational Services reserves the right to suspended the ability to participate until the cancellation fee is collected. 

  • There are no refunds on punch passes. 


How to pay for your tennis or pickleball court:  

  • Each participant will pay their portion of the court upon check-in at the HTRC prior to playing.  

  • Each participant’s reservation fee will be based on their membership status, as well as if it is singles or doubles play.   

  • Payment or punch pass redemption will only be collected in person at the time of check-in.  

  • Punch passes can only be used by the participant who purchased the pass.  
    Exception: Dependents can use parent/guardian’s punch passes if the membership status is equivalent.
