The Campus Recreation Wellness Center opened during the summer of 2010.  This state-of-the-art facility boasts 20,000 square feet of fitness space over three levels, a 52 and a half foot climbing wall, a 50-meter competitive swimming pool, 18-foot deep diving well, a Recreation Swimming Pool, a one-ninth mile jogging track, two basketball/volleyball courts, one multi-activity gym, a café, locker rooms, upgraded club locker rooms, a Wellness Suite and the Recreational Services Administrative Suite. In 2013, Best College Reviews ranked the CRWC No. 3 nationally in a publication outlining the 25 most amazing campus student recreation centers.

The CRWC Pool features include zero-depth entry, bubble benches, a 25-person spa, a vortex, a current channel, water volleyball, water basketball, a climbing wall, and a video board.

The Wellness Suite brings together staff from UI Wellness, Student Wellness, and Recreational Services for fitness assessments, nutrition counseling, and a variety of other wellness offerings. Massage therapy is also available.

The CRWC is located on the southwest corner of Burlington and Madison Streets. Parking is available one block southeast in Lot 11.

Gymnasium Rules

  • Items and activities PROHIBITED in the gymnasium:
    • Kicking or throwing basketballs and/or other equipment toward the wall, ceiling, track and/or windows. Violators will be asked to leave the facility immediately.
    • Hanging on the nets or rims.
    • Outdoor sports including football, baseball, softball, frisbee, and lacrosse.
    • Fighting, unruly conduct, profanity, or rough play. Violators will be asked to leave the facility immediately.
    • No food or drinks are allowed. Water or sports drinks in closed plastic containers are permitted.
    • No spitting on the courts or windows.
  • A non‐marking, athletic shoe that covers the entire foot must be worn at all times.
  • In the event of an injury or accident, contact a facility supervisor.

Basketball Challenge Rules

  • A verbal challenge is issued by waiting players. No one in a game may call the next game.
  • Challenges can only be issued on one court and the challenger must be present before the preceding game ends.
  • Only one person is needed to issue a challenge.
  • Players from the losing team may be chosen for the next game only if no other players are present and waiting.
  • Games are limited to 15 baskets (win by two).
  • Teams winning three consecutive games must sit out a minimum of one game if other players are waiting.
  • Basketball games have priority on Court 2 except for the times listed for volleyball priority.
  • To ensure gender equity, Court 1 is designated “Priority for Women” (Minimum of eight women).
    • When the number of females participating decreases below the number required, the court will go back to regular challenge rules.

Volleyball Priority

  • Volleyball games will take priority on Court 2 during the following times:
    • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 2:00 p.m.
    • Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 p.m.  – 9:00 p.m.
  • Games are rally scoring (play to 25, win by two).
  • The winning team will keep the court. Teams winning two consecutive games must sit out a minimum of one game if other teams are waiting to play.
  • Must have a minimum of six players.


Priority Usage for MAC Gym:

  1. Scheduled Recreational Services Activities/Events.
  2. Soccer with a minimum of six players.
  3. Volleyball with a minimum of six players.
  4. Basketball.

Indoor Futsal Challenge Rules:

  • The first team to score two goals wins; the winning team stays on the court.
  • Games are played for 10 minutes, and whoever is ahead wins the game.
  • If a game is tied after 10 minutes, both teams come off.
  • Slide tackling is not allowed.
  • Must have a minimum of six players.

Recreational Services indoor futsal balls are the only futsal ball permitted in the MAC Gym. Checkout is available at the Equipment Desk.

Track Rules: 

  • Track directional arrow changes daily. Follow the arrow for the appropriate direction:
    • Run/Walk counterclockwise on even days.
    • Run/Walk clockwise on odd days.
  • Track Distance: one-ninth of a mile.
  • Walkers, wheelchair users, slower runners, and stroller users should use the Inside Lane.
  • Joggers and runners should use the Outside Lane.
  • Youth 13 years of age and under must have direct supervision to use the track.
  • Proper shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Items and activities Prohibited on the track:
    • Standing or in any way blocking the lanes.
    • Bringing accessory equipment onto the track (weights, medicine balls, etc).
    • No spitting on the track.
  • Stretching and warm‐up exercises are to occur in the stretching areas only.
  • Personal possessions should be stored in a locker or cubbies. Recreational Services is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

General Pool Rules

  • A Recreational Services lifeguard must be present before entering the water.
  • Emergency Signal—three whistle blasts. Exit the pool immediately.
  • No diving in the shallow end of the swimming pool and in other areas where it is marked “NO DIVING”.
  • No horseplay in or around the swimming pool.
  • No running on the deck.
  • Proficient swimming ability is required in deep water areas.
  • Do not enter the pool if you have a communicable disease or an open wound.
  • Shower before entering the pool and after the use of restroom facilities.
  • Proper swimwear is required.
  • Glass containers are prohibited in the pool area.
  • Do not bring food, drink, gum, alcohol, or tobacco products into the pool.
  • Swimming or diving instruction may be provided solely by Recreational Services aquatics staff or approved groups.
  • Activity deemed unsafe by the lifeguard will be prohibited.

Daily Walk-in Fees

A Daily Walk-in fee can be paid in order to gain admittance to all recreation facilities on campus for one day.

Ages (19+) $10.00 per day

*Youth ages 13 and under must be directly supervised by an adult to access Recreational Services facilities. Youth under 13 are not allowed in the fitness areas. They are also not able to take regular group exercise or mind/body classes. 

ID Policy

Recreational Services will require a photo ID for anyone 14 and older when purchasing a daily pass or a membership.


Locker Services

A valid Recreation Membership for the length of the locker rental will be necessary in order to rent a locker. Recreational Services welcomes patrons to use the locker room that is right for them. The CRWC has a Men’s and Women’s Member Locker Room, Men’s and Women’s Club Locker Room and a Family Locker Room. Lockers are available for rent in the Member and Club Locker Rooms. Daily Coin Lockers are available in each of the locker rooms. Anyone can use the Family Locker Room, regardless of gender identity or expression.

Member Locker Room $12.00 per month
Club Locker Room (Upscale locker room with a secured entry, a TV lounge, carpeted floors and wood lockers) $20.00 per month

Locker Policies

It is the renter's responsibility to renew or clear out a locker on or before the expiration date. If they fail to remove the contents, consent is given to Recreational Services to remove and dispose of the locker contents. A $5 storage and retrieval fee will be charged to reclaim cleared locker contents. The University of Iowa is not responsible for lost or stolen items
