Specialty fitness programs are designed to give participants more specific, personalized feedback from their instructor, while working in a group setting. You must be a Recreational Services member to purchase and participate in specialty fitness programs. View all of our current offerings below!

Women in Weightlifting class.

Women in Weightlifting

This program is for women who are interested in getting strong and fit using barbell exercises. Technique-based coaching will be given each session, focusing on the basic barbell lifts: the squat, deadlift, row, bench press, and overhead press. Accessory lifts and gym safety will also be covered. We will wrap up each day by putting what we learned into practice with a sweat-induced, challenging weightlifting workout together.

Powerhawks: Unified Powerlifting Team

This training program is designed for our community’s Special Olympic athletes. We will assist in safely training to specifically prepare for the Iowa Powerlifting competition. You and your coach will work together and compete as Unified Partners in the Iowa City Special Olympics competition in March 2024. There is no cost to register. 

Program Dates:

  • Jan. 30 - March 7 
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • 6:45 - 8 p.m.

Must be a Special Olympics Athlete to register.  To qualify to be an athlete, you must register with Special Olympics Iowa. You may register for our program once you complete the Special Olympics Requirements.

Payment:

  • Payment must be made at the time of registration online or at the membership desk. 
  • Forms of payment accepted: Cash, Check (made out to The University of Iowa), Credit Card, U-bill (Cash, Check, and U-bill are in-person only).

  • No refunds will be given 3-days prior to the first class.
  • There are no makeup sessions if a participant must miss a class due to their own scheduling conflicts.
  • If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, participants will be contacted prior to the start of class. 
  • If a cancellation is needed due to extenuating circumstances, the participant will need to speak with the Associate Director of Fitness immediately in order for a refund to be considered.
