Small Group Training | Recreational Services
The University of Iowa

Small group training classes are designed to give participants more specific, personalized feedback from their instructor, while working in a group setting. View all of our current offerings below!

Barre Fitness is a hybrid class that combines ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, yoga, strength training and cardio. Barre classes typically focus on small, pulsing movements that target muscles you don’t “normally use in everyday life” with emphasis on form, alignment, balance, and core engagement. Props such as light hand weights, mini stability balls, resistance bands and exercise tubing may be incorporated into the workout and will be supplied by the studio. You can expect each barre class to address multiple areas of your body, including your: arms, legs, core & glutes. All levels welcome!

This workshop is designed specifically to build the glutes! Learn in-depth techniques and proper progressions for barbell hip thrusts, sumo squat, Bulgarian split squats, dead-lift variations, and other hip extension variations. The workshop will also cover hip-band glute activation exercises in detail, which are essential for lower body lifting sessions. Glute strength is not only aesthetic but is an important aspect of injury prevention and will improve overall strength and posture. This workshop is 3 hours total, broken into two Saturday morning workshops. The small group training session is taught by a certified USA Weightlifting Coach who is also a competitive powerlifter. This workshop will be held on two back-to-back Saturday mornings.  Please note that these dates correspond to Saturdays with away football games, so there are no issues with parking and access to the Field House location.

This single two-hour workshop is focused entirely on the barbell back squat. Many trainers argue that squats are the best exercise because they work more muscles than any other single exercise. Whether you are new to lifting with the barbell, or you are an advanced lifter—there will be something you can take away from this technique-driven learning session. You will also receive a printed sample workout showing you how to program ‘squat-only’ workout days into your fitness schedule. The class is taught by a certified USA Weightlifting Coach who is also a competitive powerlifter.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Proper warm-ups for back squat and tips for increasing range of motion (ankle, hip, and shoulder mobility)
  • Barbell positioning (high bar vs. low bar)
  • Hip-dominant vs. quad-dominant squats
  • Common sticking points with the squat and how to overcome them
  • Practicing the skill of squatting using changes in tempo and pause squats
  • Going through a typical workout focused only on barbell back squatting

This workshop will be held on a Saturday morning. Please note that this date corresponds with an away football game.

This program is for women who are interested in getting strong and fit using barbell exercises. Technique-based coaching will be given each session, focusing on the basic barbell lifts: the squat, deadlift, row, bench press, and overhead press. Accessory lifts and gym safety will also be covered. We will wrap up each day by putting what we learned into practice with a sweat-induced, challenging weightlifting workout together.
