Small group training classes are designed to give participants more specific, personalized feedback from their instructor, while working in a group setting. You must be a Recreational Services member to purchase and participate in small group training offerings. View all of our current offerings below!

Barre Fitness is a hybrid class that combines ballet-inspired moves with elements of Pilates, yoga, strength training and cardio. Barre classes typically focus on small, pulsing movements that target muscles you don’t “normally use in everyday life” with emphasis on form, alignment, balance, and core engagement. Props such as light hand weights, mini stability balls, resistance bands and exercise tubing may be incorporated into the workout and will be supplied by the studio. You can expect each barre class to address multiple areas of your body, including your: arms, legs, core & glutes. All levels welcome!

Build explosive power through rotational core training with landmine lifts. Oblique plane movements are underutilized in traditional strength training but are exceptional for increasing body awareness, helping build a well-balanced/muscular body and addressing unilateral body asymmetry in a hard-core, fun way. These lifts are not complex to learn but require a healthy level of fitness and general strength. This offering will present the opportunity for participants to weight-lift in a unique, ballistic way. Sign up, and mentally prepare to GET AFTER IT!

TRX stands for totally radical exercises. Not really, but that's what we'll be doing. Come learn all about incorporating the TRX into your workout plan, learn how to utilize it safely and effectively, and spend time with your friendly neighborhood personal trainer, Chase.

Registration

This program is for women who are interested in getting strong and fit using barbell exercises. Technique-based coaching will be given each session, focusing on the basic barbell lifts: the squat, deadlift, row, bench press, and overhead press. Accessory lifts and gym safety will also be covered. We will wrap up each day by putting what we learned into practice with a sweat-induced, challenging weightlifting workout together.

How to register online:

Payment:

  • Payment must be made at the time of registration online or at the membership desk. 
  • Forms of payment accepted: Check (made out to The University of Iowa), Credit Card, U-bill (U-bill is in-person only).

  • No refunds will be given 3-days prior to the first class.
  • There are no makeup sessions if a participant must miss a class due to their own scheduling conflicts.
  • If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, participants will be contacted prior to the start of class. 
  • If a cancellation is needed due to extenuating circumstances, the participant will need to speak with the Associate Director of Fitness immediately in order for a refund to be considered.
