2017 Wrestling Rules

Rule 1: Facility

  1. All matches will be held in the Iowa Wresting Room at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Rule 2: Player Eligibility

  1. All Intramural Sports eligibility rules apply. Please check the Intramural Sports Rules and Regulations carefully.
  2. All participants must check-in with their University or valid government-issued IDs with the supervisor prior to the start of the tournament.
  3. If participating for Coach’s Corner Intramural Sports Championship points, individuals should indicate their organization names during registration.

Rule 3: Ground Rules

  1. Periods will be 1 – 2 – 2 minutes in length.
  2. In period one both wrestlers start on their feet. In the second period, a coin flip will determine which wrestler will choose up, down, neutral or defer to the third period.
  3. Overtime will be one minute in length and will be sudden-death format with both wrestlers starting on their feet.
  4. If a second overtime is necessary, a coin flip will determine which wrestler will choose up or down. The down wrestler must escape within 30 seconds to win, while the top wrestler must ride out for 30 seconds in order to win.
  5. Riding time will not be kept.
  6. Stalling: A first stalling violation will result in a warning. Subsequent stalling violations will result in the following deductions: 1 pt., 2 pts., and match forfeiture.

Rule 4: Point System

  1. For the Coach’s Corner Intramural Sports Points Championship, meet points are awarded as follows:
Individual Points
Escape 1 Point
Takedown 2 Points
Reversal 2 Points
Near Fall (2-4 seconds) 2 Points
Near Fall (5+ seconds) 4 Points
Penalties 1 Point

 

Team Points
Decision (1-7 Points) 3 Points
Major Decision (8-14 Points) 4 Points
Technical Fall (15+ Points) 5 Points
Pin 6 Points
Forfeit (Any Round) -6 Points
Champion in Weight Class 5 Points
Second in Weight Class 3 Points
Semifinalist (if 8 or more in weight class) 1 Point

Rule 5: Meet Rules

  1. A team MUST compete in three weight classes in order to earn Coach’s Corner Intramural Sports Points Championship points.
  2. Each team competing for Coach’s Corner Intramural Sports Points Championship points may have as many wrestlers in each weight class as it wishes, but only the top finisher per organization in each weight class will earn points.
  3. All wrestlers will arrive at the designated time for weigh-ins and will be called to the mat when their matches are up.  Not reporting when called will result in a forfeit.
  4. All participants must wear either a t-shirt and shorts, or a wrestling singlet.
  5. All participants must wear wrestling shoes, socks, or wrestle barefoot.
  6. Headgear is optional.
  7. All participants must wear colored leg bands during their matches.
  8. NCAA Wrestling rules will be used unless otherwise noted in these rules.
  9. All participants must exhibit good sportsmanship. The Intramural Staff retains the right to disqualify a participant due to unsportsmanlike behavior, and that person is subject to the ejection policy as state in the Intramural Sports Rules and Regulations.
