Wilderness Medical Certification Classes

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course

The WFR is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions. Instruction contracted through SOLO School of Wilderness Medicine.

The WFR is 72 hours (8 days), and is a comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. Although these appear to be the same basic topics covered in our two-day WFA course, they are covered far more extensively, and there is much more hands-on practice. Additional topics, such as CPR, are also included.

How to Register Online:

You must have an online account to make a reservation. If you do not have an account, here's what you need to know:

  • If you are a staff, faculty, or student, you already have an account - just use your Hawk ID and password.
  • If you've already created an account as a member of Rec Services or for other programs (swim lessons, fitness classes, etc), you are all ready to make a reservation!
  • If you do not have an account, please call 319-335-9293 or stop by the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center membership desk to set up an account. This is our first time with online reservations and we appreciate your patience and flexibility through the transition!

Wilderness First Aid

The WFA is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. It also meets the ACA guidelines. The WFA is 16 hours long (two days), and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies.

Patrons can add the CPR section for an additional $35. Also should be known that anyone with a previous Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification can take this course as a WFR Recertification.
