Tropical Indoor Triathlon

Make the most of winter by competing in the 6th Annual Tropical Indoor Triathlon! The triathlon consists of 10 minutes swimming, biking, and running sections. This is the perfect opportunity for triathlon newbies and experienced athletes alike! Individual and team options available. 

Registration

Registration is open!

Race day registration is allowed.

Fees

Individuals - $30 + annual/1-day USAT membership

Teams - $45 per team + annual/1-day USAT membership

Double Dare - $45 + annual/1-day USAT membership

*If you do not have a USAT membership, you will have to pay for a day pass or annual membership

  • This event is sanctioned by USAT. You have the opportunity to get nationally-ranked results and it gives participants insurance coverage by USAT. To race in a USAT approved race you need a USAT membership. Many triathletes have a this, but if you are new and do not have one races will offer a one time day-pass for that race only. It is $15 for adults, $10 for 17 and under + youth.

Current military, veterans, and ROTC cadets will receive a 10% discount on registration.  Must register in person and present military ID, DD214 forms, or orders for ROTC cadets to receive discount.  All teams who have at least one military person on the team will receive 10% off the Team registration.

Schedule

2 divisions: Collegiate/High School and Age Group

*There are 16 participants per heat

Collegiate/High School - This division is specifically for Collegiate and High School athletes trying to qualify for Collegiate Nationals 

  • 7:00 am check in and body marking
  • 7:30 am pre-race meeting
  • 7:45 am swim warm up
  • 8:00 am Wave 1 start
  • 11:00 am last wave finished
  • 11:30 am Collegiate awards ceremony
  • All transitions 10 minutes

Age Group - This division is open to all athletes; age group categories are listed at the bottom

  • 9:00 check in and body marking
  • 9:30 pre-race meeting
  • 9:45 swim warm up
  • 10:00 Wave 1 start
  • 2:00 last wave finished
  • 2:30 Age Group awards ceremony
  • All transitions 10 minutes

The Double Dare (part of Age Group division) - NEW in 2017 for the more adventurous competitors who wish to do two waves instead of one.  Athletes that race twice will receive 50% off their second registration! Athletes taking the Dare will earn a composite score consisting of the sum distance of both races and be entered into a second overall male and female division to compete for the title of Tropical Indoor Champion! The better of the two race performances will be used to determine rank in the Age Group competition. 

  • To sign up, select "Individual Participant" on the registration site and then select "Double Dare" on the following page. These athletes will be in the first wave to go off and then be placed in a sub-sequent wave as soon as they finish their first wave.

All events will take place in the CRWC. There will be a check-in/day of registration desk for athletes where body marking will take place.

Collegiate/High School

Event 1: Swim

  • 500 Meters
  • Location: University Aquatics Pool
  • Wheelchair users may use the aid of life jacket and leg, feet, and ankle cuffs

Transition #1: 10 minutes

Event 2: Bike

  • 8 Miles
  • Equipment: Matrix IC7 Stationary Bikes on second floor on Court 1.
  • Wheelchair users - bicycle ergometer

Transition #2: 10 minutes

Event 3: Run

  • 2 Miles
  • Equipment: Matrix treadmills
  • Wheelchair users - bicycle ergometer

Age Group

Event 1: Swim

FAQs

How do I volunteer?

Volunteers are needed for this event. Please contact volunteer coordinator Lander Geadelmann OR sign up here.

What type of equipment is provided?

  • Participants are required to provide their own equipment such as swim suits, caps, and biking and running shoes.  Refreshments and towels will be provided.
  • The University Aquatics Pool will be set up with 8-25 yard lanes (2 participants per lane)
  • The Diving well will be set up for participants to warm up before their heat.
  • Matrix Stationary bikes (First Floor) will be used for the bike portion.
  • Wheelchair Users will use a bicycle ergometer for bike portion.
  • Matrix Treadmills (Second Floor) will be used for the run portion.

How are champions determined?

Collegiate/High School:

  • Collegiate/High School results will be based on the total tine to complete 500 yards swimming, 8 miles cycling, and 2 miles running.
  • The top 3 Collegiate males and the top 3 Collegiate females will all receive awards as well as the top 3 High School males and females.

Age Group:

  • Since the amount of time spent on each section is identical for each participant (10 minutes per section), champions are determined by total distance traveled. Volunteers will record the total laps (swimming) and miles (biking and running) completed during the event. The total distance traveled will determine the champions for each age group. 
  • Awards will be given to the fastest male and female in each age group as well as the top female and male competitor overall.
  • The top two wheelchair and the top two teams will also receive an award.

Double Dare:

  • The top male and female will receive an award in this category.

How are Age Groups divided?

Age Groups are listed below. Each Age Group is divided into male and female sections. Prizes are awarded for overall and category winners based distance traveled. 

  • 14-17
  • 18-24
  • 25-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50+

*The minimum age requirement is 14. It is strongly recommended that participants are at least 5'2 in order to fit on the spin bikes. Athletes shorter than this may still compete but may have to stand on the bike for part of or the duration of the biking portion.
