Snowy Owl Camp | Recreational Services
University of Iowa

Update: Both sessions are full!

Spend your Winter break exploring, learning, and having fun at Snowy Owl Camp!

This year, we are offering two sessions of camp:

  • Session 1: December 27 – 29, 2017 ($150) FULL
  • Session 2: January 2 – 5, 2018 ($200) FULL

Camps are for first through sixth graders.

About Snowy Owl Camp

The theme this year for Snowy Owl Camp is how animals blend in AND stand out in the natural world. For example, why does the male Northern Cardinal remain bright red when the male American Goldfinch loses it bright plumage? Snowy Owls can be camouflaged on the tundra but does that help them in Iowa in winter too?  What about our mammals that remain active?  The colors and patterns in nature are great and varied.  Our activities, games and discussions this year will revolve around these topics.

In both sessions, we will study the subnivean zone, the woodlands habitat in winter and how freezing temperatures affect our wetlands. Our hope is to do lots of exploring in these habitats with the snow and ice around us.  On the fourth day of the second session, we may participate in a Bald Eagle survey that could also include banding other birds of prey.

In addition, campers will do the following: rock climb and swim at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, spend time at Macbride Nature Recreation Area and the outside spaces around the Hawkeye Recreation Fields and Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Climbing days are the second day of each session and swim days are the third day of each session. Please bring clean tennis shoes for climbing and a swimsuit and towel for the swim days.

A lot of new knowledge will be shared and much fun will be had by all who participate in Snowy Owl Camps 2017. We are looking forward to our adventures together!
