University of Iowa

Thank you for choosing to participate in UI Wildlife Camps this summer! We are looking forward to an adventurous summer that will include fun, hands-on investigations within all our ecosystems at Macbride Nature Recreation Area (MNRA). We will learn the science of nature while still experiencing the best of recreation. Below you'll find all the information you'll need to know for your campers to have a successful experience with us!

What to wear

Because we spend all, if not most, of our time in the outdoors you should come prepared for sun, rain and everything nature may bring. We recommend either wearing or bringing:

  • Sunscreen
  • T-shirts verses tank tops to prevent sunburned shoulders.
  • Raincoat or poncho. Camp goes on, even in the rain. Programs will move inside when necessary during storm watches and warnings.
  • Proper shoes are important! This could be a pair of tennis shoes, hiking boots or sandals that stay on feet snugly and are designed for hiking and exploring outside.
  • Winged Warrior campers will swim on the last day of camp - please pack a suit and towel.

What to bring

  • Campers should bring their own snack, lunch and water bottle. Additional water will be provided.  We’ve seen some progress in the reduction of non-recyclable waste generated at lunchtime. We would love to see this continue. If possible, avoid over-packaged products and bring reusable containers. We will follow a carry-in/carry-out policy.
  • If you're signed up for Owl Camp or Pereginatio Per Iowam, please see a list of items to bring for overnights below.

A word about HEAT & TICKS

What we do about HEAT: Stay in the shade, rehydrate, take breaks and find fun ways to cool down with water & fans. In extreme situations we will try and find an air-conditioned site to go to for some or part of the day.

What you can do about HEAT: Send water, hats and lightweight clothes.  Remind your camper/s to take breaks and drink frequently on their own AND when staff ask them to.

What we do about TICKS: Regular checks, remove & dispose if found & report to families if one was found and removed.

What you can do about TICKS: Regular checks, have camper wear light colored clothing so  a tick is easier to see & use insect repellent before camp/during camp.
