What is Unified Basketball?
The University of Iowa Intramural Sports has partnered with Special Olympics Iowa to offer Unified Basketball. Now in it's second season, Unified Basketball pairs Special Olympics athletes with traditional participants, called Unified Partners. Each team will have up to five Special Olympics athletes, and five partners. These teams will compete against one another in our Unified Basketball league.

When is Unified Basketball?
There will be a Skills Assessment on Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30 PM in the Field House South Gym. All registered Unified Partners will be required to attend to help with the assessment stations. The Special Olympics athletes will go through different skills assessment stations to evaluate their Basketball skills. These assessments will be used to make teams. Following the Skills Assessment, all Unified Partners will be required to attend a Unified Partner meeting. This meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 5 at 7:30 PM, or when assessment stations are done, and will take place in Room 201 of the Field House.

Our Unified Basketball league will play on Tuesday nights at 6:30 PM at the Field House South Gym. There will be a practice night on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30 PM to allow teams to practice and get to know each other. Games will begin on Tuesday, February 19. Each team will play three regular season games. All four teams will make the playoffs, which will begin on Tuesday, March 12. The two semifinal winners will play in the Unified Basketball championship on a day and time to be determined.

How Do I Get Registered?
We are still looking for partners to play on teams with Special Olympics athletes. If you are interested, email Assistant Director, Sport Programs, Shannon Tumelty.
