Registration and Event Information

Registration Period: Wednesday, March 1 at 8:00 AM through Wednesday, March 22 at 11:59 PM on                

Play Begins: Sunday, March 26 at the Hawkeye Softball Complex (Weather Permitting)

League Format: Teams will play three regular season games, followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament for the teams that qualify.

Sport Description

Spring Training is just around the corner, so you know what that means… Men’s and Women’s Intramural Softball is back! This version of Softball features pitches being thrown underhand to accommodate all skill levels. Teams will field 10 players on defense, meaning you and a big group of friends can enjoy several fun and energetic nights out at the Hawkeye Softball Complex! So, gather some friends, get registered on, and get those arms loosened up, because Intramural Softball is here!

Important Information

  1. To participate in Intramural Sports, a UI Student, Faculty, Staff or Affiliate must purchase an Intramural Sports Membership. This $20.00/semester membership allows you to participate in almost any Intramural sport/event that semester. There is no cost to register a team, but team members must purchase the Intramural Sports Membership before joining/creating a team.   2. There is no limit to the size of a team’s roster, however, a team must have eight players to complete registration. Team captains may add players to the roster up until the day of the team’s quarterfinal playoff game.
  3. Team captains may add players to the roster up until the game’s scheduled start time.
  4. Before each game, all players must present a valid UI or government-issued ID to participate.
  5. During registration, teams will select the day of the week and time at which they will play their regular season games (Ex. Monday 7:00). Playoff games will be scheduled on multiple weeknights and/or Sunday nights throughout the span of a couple weeks. Teams that qualify for the playoffs, and continue to advance, should expect to play on any night of the week during playoffs, other than Friday or Saturday, and should expect to play multiple times in one week.
  6. Teams will field 10 players, and may bat up to 12 players. In order to begin a game, eight players must be PRESENT within 10 minutes of a team’s scheduled game time. If this requirement is not met, the game will be forfeit.
  7. A leagues are for more experienced/skilled softball players. The team that wins an A playoff tournament will receive Intramural Champion T-shirts. B leagues are for less experienced/more social softball players. The team that wins the B playoff tournament will not receive Intramural Champion T-shirts.
  8. Team sportsmanship will be rated by the officials on a scale of 1-to-4, with 4 being excellent and 1 being poor. Teams must maintain an average of 2.5 or better throughout the season to qualify for the playoffs and to remain in the league.   9. Playoffs will take place following the 3-week regular season. The top two teams in each division will advance to the playoffs.
  10. Any forfeit/no-show will result in a Forfeit Fine of $50.00. This fine is charged to the University Bill of the team captain.

You can join as a Free Agent on if you have paid the Intramural Sports Membership Fee, or you can join our Free Agent Group on Facebook to connect with other people looking for more players to form a team. Listing yourself as a Free Agent does not guarantee you will be on a team.

Mandatory Online Captain's Quiz

2017 Season

  • In order to create a team, add players and select a division, each captain must pass the Captain’s Quiz. The quiz will become available Wednesday, March 1, 2017. The quiz is available by clicking the “Create Team” button on the Softball home page on
  • All captains are encouraged to utilize the Captain’s Guide, which is available on the Intramural Sports website. Failure to utilize the resources made available to you is not an excuse for not knowing sport or program rules or regulations.

  • If a team captain fails to complete the Captain’s Quiz, he/she will not be able to register a team. A captain can take the quiz as many times as needed in order to register his/her team.
  • Space in each time slot is limited, so please have all items completed promptly.
