When Henry graduates next spring, we might have to hire five people to replace him because he pretty much works in ever single area of our Outdoor program including the Climbing Wall, Wildlife Camps, Challenge Course, and helping with Lifetime Leisure Skills classes! Even though he's a busy guy he still managed to take a few minutes to tell us about himself and get a quick photo at the wall. Thanks to Henry for sharing your passion for the outdoors with so many through Rec Services.

Position: Climbing Wall supervisor, Challenge Course facilitator, Lifetime Leisure Skills assistant, Wildlife Camps instructor

Year/Major: Senior; Elementary Education with ESL and Spanish

Hometown: Byron, MN

How long have you worked for us?: This is my 4th year working for Rec Services; I began as a first-semester freshman.

Your work for a lot of areas within our outdoor programs - do you have a favorite?: My favorite positions in the outdoor programs are assisting with the Intro to Rock Climbing LLS classes and also working for the Wildlife Camps.

What have you learned from working in your numerous positions?: I have learned the importance of taking initiative and communication between coworkers.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about working in the outdoors?: Working in the outdoors helps you to prioritize what is important in life. When I'm climbing, the only thing that matters is trying not to fall - everything else fades into the background.

What do you do in your spare time?: In my spare time, I take rock climbing trips with friends in the University of Iowa climbing community.

Where’s your favorite outdoor space in or around Iowa City?: Macbride Nature Recreation Area

Any plans after graduation?: After graduation, I will be teaching English in a Spanish-speaking country either through Fulbright or the Peace Corps.

If you could eat any food every day for the rest of your life without any health consequences, what would it be?: I would eat Xiao Long Bao, a type of Chinese dumpling, every day for the rest of my life.

What (one of) Henry's supervisors says about him:  Henry is actively involved in every single area of the Outdoor Programs and does an absolutely incredible job! He brings tons of creativity, enthusiasm, and a strong passion for sharing his knowledge with others. His energy is contagious and our students, participants, and campers all love him! - Steve Campbell, Assistant Director - Lifetime Leisure Skills and the Challenge Course
