Location:         Beckwith Boathouse (BBH)

Supervisor:      Rowing Instructor

Rate of pay:     $11/hour (starting wage)


Participate in providing rowing instruction for the Department of Recreational Services Hawkeye Community Rowing Program. 


  • Knowledge of all policies and procedures of the facility
  • Facilitate, design and implement lessons and practices for the Recreational Services Hawkeye Community Rowing Program.
  • Coach rowing practices.
  • Assist in the supervision of the use of equipment including maintenance, practice and racing.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures for all participants and equipment to include the inspection of the Hawkeye Community Rowing Program equipment and the inspection of the written logs that pertain to said equipment.
  • Maintain excellent customer service.  Respond to suggestions, complaints, needs and interests in a timely manner.
  • Be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that will include early mornings, late evening and weekends
  • Work cooperatively with other areas of the department to achieve established goals
  • Provides support for special events, as needed


  • Some (1-3 years) rowing experience. 
  • Excellent written and verbal skills. 
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications.
  • Ability to use independent judgment when needed
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivate

Desirable Requirements

  • Reasonable experience (6 months-1year) as a rowing coach.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of rowing equipment maintenance. 
  • A coaching certificate in US Rowing at Level I or Level II.  

Training/Certification Requirements

  • Iowa Boat Safety Certification, Current CPR, AED and First-Aid (or be able to obtain each within six months of employment). 
  • Completion of Bloodborne Pathogens and Cash Handling training upon hire.
