Location:         Campus Recreation & Wellness Center (CRWC) and Field House (FH)

Supervisor:      Assistant Director for Aquatics

Rate of Pay:     $11.60/hour (starting wage)

Function

You can expect to learn skills such as leadership, coordinating lifeguard procedures, problem-solving, and work with people from diverse backgrounds as well as part of a team. Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learnhere will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.

Function

Responsible for supervising the lifeguard staff and daily operations of Recreational Services pools.

Responsibilities

  • Open and close Aquatic Center in the morning, evening, and on weekends.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising of the lifeguard staff.
  • Create and monitor lifeguard staff schedules to ensure all shifts are covered.
  • Lifeguard as necessary to fill shifts.
  • Assist in the planning and teaching of skills during in-service training sessions.
  • Independently lead monthly training sessions.
  • Consistently enforce all aquatic center policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform safety drills/testing of lifeguard staff.
  • Hold lifeguards to the required standards and responsibilities.
  • Track lifeguard staff certifications to ensure current certifications are maintained.
  • Record and tabulate hourly pool attendance.
  • Inspect the facility and delegate maintenance or cleaning duties as necessary.
  • Perform pool chemical checks and maintain records.
  • Complete daily records, reports, and assist with payroll.
  • Coordinate with Assistant Director on special event set-up, tear-down, and staffing.
  • Act as manager on duty during special events (e.g. birthday parties, inflatables, etc.).
  • Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).
  • Maintain current certifications including any additional safety training.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one semester working at the CRWC as a lifeguard
  • Outstanding customer service skills; competent computer and audio-visual skills.
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.

  • Attend weekly meetings with Aquatic program staff.
  • Ability to use independent judgment when needed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that will include early mornings, late evening, weekends and University breaks (e.g. Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer).
  • Open to college students and non-students.

Training/Certification Requirements

  • Current Certifications in the following:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards (or Professional Rescuer)
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor within 3 months of hire
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (preferred)
  • Completion of University of Iowa Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check
