Registration and Event Information

Registration Period: Monday, March 27 at 8:00 AM through Monday, April 10 at 11:59 PM on 

Play Begins: Monday, April 17 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Iowa Turf

League Format: Teams will play two pool play games, followed by a single elimination playoff tournament for the teams that qualify. 

Sport Description

No football on TV got you down in the dumps? Well, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Intramural 4-on-4 Flag Football is back again at The University of Iowa! This fast-paced, up-tempo style of Flag Football is played on a smaller field, and features lots of scoring. With only four players per team on the field at a time, this is a fantastic opportunity to get in a workout without having to go to the gym. There is still football that needs to be played, so, grab your friends and get registered for 4-on-4 Flag Football on today!

Important Information

  1. To participate in Intramural Sports, a UI Student, Faculty, Staff or Affiliate must purchase an Intramural Sports Membership. This $20.00/semester membership allows you to participate in almost any Intramural sport/event that semester. There is no cost to register a team, but team members must purchase the Intramural Sports Membership before joining/creating a team.   2. There is no limit to the size of a team’s roster, however, a team must have three players to complete registration. Team captains may add players to the roster up until the day of the team’s quarterfinal playoff game. 
  3. Team captains may add players to the roster up until the game’s scheduled start time.
  4. Before each game, all players must present a valid UI or government-issued photo ID to participate.
  5. Teams will consist of four players on the field at a time. Three players must be READY TO PLAY within 10 minutes of a team’s scheduled game time. If this requirement is not met, the game will be forfeit.
  6. Team sportsmanship will be rated by the officials on a scale of 1-to-4, with 4 being excellent and 1 being poor. Teams must maintain an average of 2.5 or better throughout the season to qualify for the playoffs and to remain in the league. A more detailed breakdown of the sportsmanship scale can be found in the Intramural Sports Rules and Regulations.
  7. Playoffs will take place following the one-week regular season. Divisions will consist of three teams, with both pool play games being played in one night, and the single-elimination tournament being played the following week. The top two teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs.
  8. Each team will select the day and time in which it will play its pool play games. Playoff games will be Monday through Thursday, April 24-27. Teams that qualify and continue to advance should expect to play multiples nights that week.
  9. Any forfeit/no-show will result in a Forfeit Fine of $50.00. This fine is charged to the University Bill of the team captain.
  10. Interested in becoming an official? 4-on-4 Flag Football official’s training takes place on Tuesday, April 11. More information on how to work for Intramural Sports can be found here!
  11. Want to play but don't have a team? You can join as a Free Agent on if you have paid the Intramural Sports Membership Fee, or you can join our Free Agent Group on Facebook to connect with other people looking for more players to form a team. Listing yourself as a Free Agent does not guarantee you will be on a team.

    Mandatory Online Captain's Quiz

    2017 Tournament

    • In order to create a team, add players and select a division, each captain must pass the Captain’s Quiz. The quiz will become available on Monday, March 27, 2017. The quiz is available by clicking the “Create Team” button on the 4-on-4 Flag Football home page on
    • All captains are encouraged to utilize the Captain’s Guide, which is available on the Intramural Sports website. Failure to utilize the resources made available to you is not an excuse for not knowing sport or program rules or regulations.

    • If a team captain fails to complete the Captain’s Quiz, he/she will not be able to register a team. A captain can take the quiz as many times as needed in order to register his/her team.
    • Space in each time slot is limited, so please have all items completed promptly.
