The Iowa Flyers Swim Club is a registered USA Swimming member swim club operated by University of Iowa Recreational Services. The club is a competitive age-group swim club open to University of Iowa members and the general public which offers participation levels from developmental through Masters swimming. The club is part of a comprehensive aquatics program offered by Recreational Services. The Flyers practice in the new University of Iowa Aquatic Center in the CRWC building.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

The Iowa Flyers Swim Club is a competitive swimming organization. While the Flyers provide coaching and instruction to children and adults alike, the program is designed for swimmers who are interested in and prepared for competitive level swimming instruction. The club is not designed as a swim lesson program to teach individuals how to swim. For the safety and enjoyment of the club participants, each prospective member of the Flyers must be a minimum of 6 years of age, and must be able to complete without stopping 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke. A swim requirement test will be conducted by the Flyers coaching staff to determine if participation in the program can begin.

FREE TRIAL PERIOD

Prospective Flyers participants are encouraged to attend an optional one-week free trial period to help make an informed decision about their potential participation in the club. During this period, prospective members will be evaluated by the Flyers coaching staff to determine the appropriate participation level for the swimmer.

TEAM DUES & REGISTRATION FEES

Team dues are paid monthly and are based on the group for which the participant is registered, as shown in the fee schedule below. Each participant must also register for a USA Swimming/Iowa Swimming, Inc. athlete membership also listed in the fee schedule.

A family will be charged a maximum of $375 dollars of dues per month.

About Speedo Series

speedo The 2012 Long Course Speedo Champions Series is a sectional–level swim meet designed to be the first championship event that athletes can qualify for beyond their own state-level competition. It is most swimmer’s first chance to experience major out-of-state championship competition. The event hosted by the University of Iowa will be the USA Swimming Central Zone Section I Long Course (50-meter) Championship with athletes primarily representing the states of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The following is a description of the Iowa Flyers Training groups. Groups are organized by age*, skill level, and interest in the sport. No matter how each child chooses to engage in swimming, we welcome them and provide a place for them to grow in both their skills and their joy of the sport. We believe swimming is a lifelong activity that everyone can enjoy.
* A child’s age for determining their training group shall be their age on September 1st for the Fall and Winter season, April 1st for the Spring and Summer. Coach’s discretion may be used for special circumstances.

Practice Objectives: This group is for all swimmers 9 years old and under who are able to swim 50 yards of freestyle, 50 yards of backstroke, and are familiar with the butterfly and breaststroke. Swimmers will be learning the fundamental skills of competitive swimming in a positive and age appropriate environment. Practices will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm and Saturdays from 10:00-11:00am, all at the CRWC. Swimmers are invited and encouraged to compete in meets.

Practice Objectives: This group is for swimmers 11 years old and under who are continuing to master the 4 competitive strokes and race skills. Swimmers will work on proper swimming technique and build endurance during their practice sessions. Swim meet competition is encouraged as a fun and positive part of the swimming experience, but not required. Coaches will help each swimmer set goal times appropriate to their current skill level and improvement is the primary focus. Practices will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:00-8:00pm at the CRWC and Saturdays from 11:00am-12:00pm at the CRWC.

Swimmers will continue to refine their stroke technique while emphasizing meet preparation in their training sessions. Coaches will help swimmers set goals for meets as well as practices. Improvement continues to be the primary focus. Practices are offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30-6:00pm at the Fieldhouse, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00pm-6:30pm at the CRWC, and Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00am at the CRWC.

Practices are offered Tuesday from 5:00pm-6:30pm at the Field House, Thursday 4:30-5:30pm at the CRWC, and Saturday from 10:00am-12:00pm at the CRWC.

Practice will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30-7:00pm at the CRWC, Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-7:00pm at the Field House, Saturday from 10:00am-12:00pm at the CRWC, and Sunday from 3:00-6:00pm at the CRWC. Swimmers will do a dryland physical training program within their schedules to supplement their swim training.

Robert Pinter, Head Coach : Robert started his own personal swimming career at an early age in his native Romania. Over 13 years of competitive swimming in Europe, he won many national and international competitions including becoming European Junior Champion in the 200 butterfly in 1984 in Luxembourg. From 1990 to 1994, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison on an athletic scholarship as part of the men’s swimming team. While at UW he accumulated many accolades, including multiple All-American honors, multiple school records (one of which lasted 17 years), and Big Ten runner-up standing in several events. In 1992, Robert represented Romania at the Olympics in Barcelona, where he was a finalist in the 200 butterfly (7th place) and ended the year with a ranking of seventh in the world in that event. Pinter started his coaching career in 1999 as the head coach of the Oregon Community Swim Club in Oregon, Wisconsin. In 2002 he moved on to be the Co-Head Senior Coach of the Badger Aquatics Club in Madison. It was at Badger Aquatics that he received the Wisconsin Senior Coach of the Year award in 2004. During his time as a club coach in Wisconsin, he also coached a successful master’s swimming program. In the fall of 2004, Robert attained his first collegiate coaching position at the University of Iowa, coaching the Hawkeyes until 2008. In 2008, Pinter returned to Madison as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin, where he coached for three seasons. For the last year, he has been an assistant coach at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Robert still enjoys competing. He has participated in and completed several Ironman and half-Ironman triathlon competitions, marathons, half-marathons, and other running events, as well as open water swimming races. He and his wife Christie have a seven-year-old son Lukacs (Luke), who was born in Iowa City and has always called himself a Hawkeye.

Richard Salhus, Assistant Coach : Richard started competitive swimming at the age of 11. During his high school years he swam for Waterborn Swimming Club and Northcliff High School in Johannesburg, South Africa. His high school team won the state championships for four consecutive years; Richard was honored in his senior year being named his school’s Sportsman of the Year. Richard was a multiple South African Junior National qualifier having won numerous medals most notability gold for the 50 free and 50 fly. He was also a member of the South African Junior Squad and held state records in the 50 fly and 100 fly. Richard also qualified for multiple South African Senior Nationals and Olympic Trials, having been a finalist in the 200 free and 50 fly and won gold for 400 free and 800 free relays. Richard has competed in the United Kingdom where he held various records in Devon County and went on to win silver in the 17/18 year old 50 free and bronze in the 800 free relay at the British Youth Championships. Richard also competed in the Great Britain Open Championships and was a finalist in the men’s 50 fly and semi finalist in men’s 50 free. Richard went on to swim for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes for four years, graduating in 2011 with a Bachelors degree in Health Science with a minor in Health and Sports Studies. Whilst swimming for the Hawkeyes Richard has attained a NCAA ‘B’ cut for the 800 free relay and has been honored as Big Ten Swimmer of the Week. He also swam on 200 free and 800 free relays that ranked sixth and tenth, respectively, on Iowa's all-time best performers list.

Mike Brotherton : Mike began competitive swimming at age 6. He participated year round in age group swimming and swam for Dubuque Hempstead in High School where he was a four year letter winner and team Captain. He also obtained his Water Safety Instructor Certificate and began teaching swim lessons. Mike comes from a family of swimmers and his daughter Natalie and son Kirk have continued the tradition. Mike is also a Swimming Official and is certified as a Stroke and Turn Judge. He is a staff member at the North Liberty Aquatics Center where he lifeguards and teaches swim lessons. Mike has been an Iowa City Police Officer since graduating from the University of Iowa and is currently the late night Watch Commander.

Blanca Castillo-Lehnertz : Blanca has been in the swimming world since she was 10. During high school she competed for the Walnut Creek , California National swim team and competed at Junior Nationals in multiple years. Swimming collegiately for the University of Kansas , her specialty events were the 100 and 200 Butterfly. While in college she also swam for the Puerto Rican National swim team and placed 3rd in the 1988 Central American Games in Mexico. That year, she swam a 200 butterfly that set a U.S. Masters national record time that stood for 18 years. Following graduation from KU, Blanca attended UCLA where she earned her Master's Degree and joined an ocean swim team and competed in Pacific Ocean open water races. After teaching junior high school and high school in southern California she relocated to Iowa to raise a family. After taking six years off from swimming, she jumped back into the pool again in 1997. Blanca found the joy of competing at the national level in Masters swimming. In the 2002 Masters National Meet she finished in the top four in four events and won the national championship in the 200 butterfly. In the 2006 FINA World Master's Championships Blanca finished with two top ten performances. Blanca has been a USA Swimming certified coach for the past nine years, working with age group swimmers with a wide range of ability levels in eastern Iowa. Blanca and her husband Rod have three children (Anthony, Tereysa and Mariana).

Meredith Heath : Meredith started competitive swimming in 7th grade at Northwest Jr High School in Iowa City where she fell in love with the sport. She continued to swim competitively through high school with West High in Iowa City. After her sophomore year in high school she began swimming with Hawkeye Aquatics and continued later with I-Fly. Her senior year she was team captain of the West High Swim Team. After volunteering to work with several kids camps she found that she enjoyed teaching and working with kids. Meredith graduated with honors from West High in May 2011 and is a freshman majoring in Biology at the University of Iowa.

Michelle Koller : Michelle has loved being in the pool since the age of 10 when she joined the Burlington Swim Team. Her favorite strokes still are freestyle and butterfly. Michelle continued getting stronger and more experienced as a high school competitor and state qualifier at Burlington High School. She proceeded to swim in college at the University of Northern Iowa. Michelle has been active in the Iowa City swimming community for over eight years; coaching club, junior high, and served as the assistant varsity girls coach at Iowa City High for five years. Michelle currently also serves as a junior high and high school swimming official. Michelle day job is Operations Director for the ENT & Surgical Specialities practices of the Physicians' Clinic of Iowa in Cedar Rapids. She lives south of Riverside with her husband Ryan and son Tristan.

Rob Miecznikowski (summer only) :

Sarah Noser : Sarah has enjoyed USA Club swimming since she was in fifth grade. As a long distance swimmer her motto was “Go the extra mile…it’s not crowded.” She was the State Champion in the short course mile in 2008. Sarah attended Iowa Hawkeye Swim Camp, Loras Sports Camp and Indiana Swim Camp. At Iowa City West High School she was a four year varsity letter winner, two time state qualifier and co-captain. Sarah has taught group and private lessons for five years in addition to working as lifeguard. Future plans include a business/prelaw major in college. Sarah has had many outstanding coaches and has made wonderful friends through swimming.

Alissa Sabers : Alissa has always loved the water and started swimming competitively at the age of seven. Growing up in Decorah, Iowa, she participated first with the local summer team. In high school, Alissa competed for three years with the USS program and also swam for Decorah High School. She also worked as a lifeguard and taught American Red Cross swimming lessons for five years. Alissa graduated from the University of Iowa in 2010 with a degree in Health & Sport Studies and resides in Iowa City.

Tanja Sadecky : Tanja has enjoyed swimming nearly all her life, literally spending most of her summers during her youth in a pool. Quite by accident, she discovered her love for competitive swimming in high school and swam for her school’s team, the Washington Warriors in Cedar Rapids, IA. Tanja had a very successful swimming career excelling in most sprint events. During her high school and college days Tanja was a lifeguard and had the opportunity to teach her love of swimming at the YMCA and Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. She attended the University of Iowa and received her Bachelors of Science degree. Today, Tanja works at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and enjoys all kinds of sports, but her roots are firmly grounded in swimming. To this day, she especially enjoys coaching the younger swimmers, as she firmly believes a strong swimming foundation is the key to success in this life-long sport. Tanja currently lives in Iowa City with her husband Jeff and three children; stepdaughter Madison (20), Mickale (11), and Trinity (9).

Mitch Shanahan :

Aaron Zander : Aaron has been swimming competitively since he was 8 and still can’t stay out of the water. In high school, Aaron competed for the Cedar Falls Tigers (Iowa) where he was a member of three state championship teams, became a four-time individual state champion and All-American, and swam the third leg of the state record 200 Free Relay. Aaron continued swimming after high school for Luther College where he was a 4-year letter winner, 15-time All-Conference selection, and Academic All-Conference for all 3 eligible years in the IIAC conference. Aaron was a Dean’s List student and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a major in Elementary Education and a K-8 Music Endorsement. Aaron currently teaches at Mid-Prairie School District.
