Aikido, the way of spiritual harmony, is a practical Japanese martial art for self-defense. Aikido works because the right technique is executed from the right position, rather than because of muscular strength, so it can be practiced by people of all ages. When practicing aikido, you learn to use an attacker's momentum against him/herself; learn to blend with and neutralize your opponent effortlessly; improve your flexibility; and have fun while exercising. Class Schedule: Monday & Wednesday: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm, Friday: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Sunday: 10:30 am - Noon. Participants must be 12 years of age or older. Registration is open throughout the session. Demonstration 1/23.

Ballroom Dance - Private Lesson Package

A perfect gift to yourself or for someone special! The Private Lesson Package is tailored to individual preferences and specific dance goals, needs, timelines. Ideal for the individual who wants to learn to dance, but needs a flexible schedule to accommodate a rigorous, often changing work, or personal life. A Private Lesson Package includes private coaching sessions by arrangement with Coach DeMarco, and admission to any Ballroom Dance Open Practice sessions offered throughout the Spring 2013 semester. Private lessons may be for one person, up to a small group. All lessons are taught by Diane DeMarco, Nationally Certified Instructor, and UI Rec Services Ballroom Dance Lesson Program Director. Diane also teaches the “for academic credit” Ballroom Dance classes, I, II, and III, through the UI Lifetime Leisure Skills Department. She is trained to teach the Lead and Follower’s parts in over 15 dances. (American Style Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rhumba, Cha Cha, Bolero, Samba, Mambo, Salsa, Merengue, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Nightclub Two-Step, Hustle, Argentine Tango). If you are preparing for your “First Dance”, Father/Daughter dance, Mother/Son dance, etc., and would like a routine choreographed to a special piece of music, Diane choreographs routines and also is well versed in music editing. Hapkido is a complete martial art that teaches joint-locks, throws and finishes, kicks and punches, falling safely and ground fighting. Hapkido is a traditional martial art (not a competitive sport) that emphasizes practical self-defense, self-confidence and self-discipline. Techniques use the principal of non-resistance, turning an attacker's own strength against himself, and is thus ideal for women and smaller persons. No previous martial arts experience or athletic ability is necessary. Participants must be 16 years of age or older. Class Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 pm-9:30 pm; Saturday 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm; Monday 12:30 pm-1:30 pm in N464 FH. Student registration is open throughout the session. Shorin Ryu Karate (+16 years)

Shorin-Ryu Karate is noted for it's aggressive centerline attacks using the hands, elbows and feet. Central to Shorin-Ryu training are the kata. These exercises were developed to simulate all aspects of weaponless combat. They represent a series of offensive and defensive maneuvers incorporating blocking and striking techniques against a variety of attacks. All classes are conducted in an orthodox manner emphasizing traditional oriental discipline. The University of Iowa Shorin-Ryu Karate program was established in 1969 and is one of the oldest continuously operating karate schools in the US. The instructor is a 6TH degree black belt.
