The University of Iowa Recreational Services offers a variety of aquatic programs including:
Open Lap Swim, Masters Swim, Aquatic Courses, a Kayaking Lesson Program and Water Polo & Triathlon Sport Clubs.
The University of Iowa Recreational Services offers a United States Masters Swimming program for anyone 18 years or older. This program is for anyone who wishes to improve their swimming skills and use swimming as an aerobic fitness activity. A diverse group, swimmers range in skill from beginning lap swimmers to triathletes and elite swimmers. All levels are welcome and will be accommodated. Swimmers may come to any practice that is offered as they see fit. Masters swimming helps adult swimmers continue to develop their stroke mechanics, stay fit, and have fun through exercise. All practice sessions are conducted by trained and certified coaches. Swim meets and open water races are available but not required.
The available practice sessions are as follows:
- Tuesday – Thursday, CRWC, 6:00 AM – 7:15 AM
- Tuesday – Thursday, Field House, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
- Monday/Wednesday/Friday, CRWC, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
- Sunday, CRWC, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Fees & Registration:
* Recreational Services members will receive a 10% discount
* A current USMS (United States Masters) Membership Card is required to participate.

Adult Lesson Program
Adult Swim Beginner – This class is open to the fearful swimmer. Instruction will be provided based upon the specific desires of the adult taking the class.
Adult Swim Intermediate – This class is open to the more advanced swimmer. Instruction will be provided based upon the specific desires of the adult taking the class.

Private Swim Lesson Request Form
Private lessons offer one-on-one instruction Semi-Private lessons offer instruction from 1 instructor to 2 participants.
Private lessons are $30.00 for a 30 minute session and Semi-Privates (for 2 participants) are $50.00 for a 30 minute session. These lessons are given during normal lap swim hours.
Registering for a Private Lesson
Interested participants must fill out a private lesson request form. Once that form is received the participant will be contacted within two business days by our swim lesson coordinator to set up an initial lesson. The initial lesson includes an assessment of the swimmer’s ability plus one full lesson. This first class will last 45 minutes. The cost of the initial lesson is $45.00. Each lesson thereafter is $30.00 for 30 minutes. The initial lesson for Semi-Privates is $75.00 and each lesson thereafter is $50.00 for 30 minutes. When a lesson is arranged, both the participant must meet the instructor at the membership desk to pay for the lesson and sign off on the participant’s lesson card. This must be done for each lesson, including the initial lesson.
A refund will be given if a cancellation is made within 24 hours for both the patron and instructor. If 24 hours’ notice is not given and the instructor was present but the patron was not, the instructor is paid for the lesson and they are required to document that the patron did not show and that lesson is lost. If the instructor does not show but the patron does, the patron is given an extra lesson and the instructor is not paid for that lesson.
